Audiobooks
You listen to an audiobook differently from an album. You want to carry on exactly where you stopped, on another device too. Tunetorch has a mode of its own for that.
Setting up
Under Server settings → Audiobooks, the admin decides which genres count as audiobooks. The choice is made from the genres that exist in the library; usually that's something like “Audiobook” and “Audio drama”.
There's nothing more to set up. From then on, Tunetorch recognises audiobooks by itself.
Starting an audiobook
If you play an album whose tracks have one of these genres, or add it to the queue (as a whole album or as a single track), a dialog asks:
Start as an audiobook?
If you say yes, Tunetorch from then on remembers the exact spot for this album: the current track and the second within it. Next time, the dialog offers you Resume or From the start.
If you start with a track that isn't the first of the audiobook, Tunetorch also asks: From the start or From this track?
Because the position is stored on the server, you can stop on the computer in the living room and carry on listening in the car or on your phone.
Wrongly tagged audiobooks
Not every audiobook has the right genre, especially in mixed collections. That's why the options menu (⋮) of every album always has the entry “Play as audiobook”, whatever its genre.
That works in the app, the browser and the PWA, but not in Android Auto: there's no options menu there. Once you've started such an audiobook, the car recognises it by itself afterwards. If an album should always count as an audiobook, the matching genre is the better solution, because then every device recognises it the very first time.
Continue listening
As soon as you've started an audiobook, the user menu has an Audiobooks entry. There you see all audiobooks you've started, with cover art and a progress bar. One click and it continues.
You can listen to several audiobooks at the same time. Each keeps its own position, even if music plays in between.
In the car
In Android Auto, your audiobooks in progress are under Home → Audiobooks in progress. An audiobook there always resumes at the saved spot, even if you tap a different chapter. The car can't ask the way the dialog in the app does. More on this under App, PWA & offline → Android Auto.
If you started something as an audiobook by mistake, remove it in the continue-listening overview. Only then does the car treat the album as a normal album again.
Playback speed
In the player you set the speed between 1× and 2×. The pitch stays the same, so voices don't sound like chipmunks.
Sleep timer
The sleep timer stops playback after 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Handy for falling asleep, and Tunetorch of course still remembers the position.
Where to go next
- Playback & audio quality
- Managing metadata, in case the genres still need sorting out first
