Playlists & favourites
You put music together in two ways: with the queue for the moment and with playlists for the longer term. On top of that come favourites as a quick way of marking things.
Queue or playlist?
| Queue | Playlist | |
|---|---|---|
| Lifetime | What's playing right now | Saved permanently |
| Number | Exactly one | As many as you like |
| Saved | yes, including the playback position | yes |
| Shareable | no | yes, via “Public” |
Both live on the server. So you find the queue, including its position, on every device you sign in on.
Creating playlists
The quickest way is via the options menu (⋮) of a track, album or artist: Add to playlist. There you pick an existing playlist or create a new one straight away. New tracks always go at the end. The same track may appear more than once.
Every playlist has a name and, if you like, a description. You see it in the overview when you move the mouse over the playlist.
Each name appears only once among your playlists. If you enter a name you already use, Tunetorch tells you so and you choose a different one. Upper and lower case don't matter: “Rock” and “rock” count as the same name. Other users may still give their playlists the same names as yours.
Playlist manager
You open the playlist overview via the user menu. At the very top is the Current queue, and it isn't a copy but the queue itself: if you remove or move a track here, what plays next changes immediately. Every row has its own options menu (⋮), a click on the row jumps to that track, and you recognise the track that's playing by the equaliser bars, as everywhere. Below that you can save the queue as a new playlist.
A click on a playlist opens its detail view. That's where you do everything else:
| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Remove entries | Delete individual tracks. |
| Reorder | By dragging: on a computer by the row, on a touchscreen by the handle (⠿) on the left. The track follows your finger, and the list opens a gap at its new place. With the keyboard: tab to the handle, ↑/↓ move by one place, Home/End to the start or the end. |
| Replace the queue | Loads the playlist as the new queue. If the queue isn't empty, Tunetorch asks first. |
| Make public | Makes the playlist visible to other accounts on the server. |
| Delete | Removes the playlist, not the tracks. |
| Export audio | In the options menu (⋮) next to “Replace queue”: exports the playlist along with an .m3u8 (Export permission, see Exporting music). |
Here too, every track has its own options menu: play now, add to the queue or to another playlist, go to the artist or album. So you don't have to start the whole playlist for a single track.
Public playlists of other accounts are listed in the overview too. Only their owner and an admin can change them.
Favourites
With the heart you mark tracks, albums and artists as favourites. Favourites belong to your account; others don't see them.
This is where you'll find the heart:
- in the track table of the library
- in an opened album
- on the artist profile page
- in “Most played tracks”
- in the Android app, but not in Android Auto. There, a button of its own in the playback screen can't be shown reliably because of a limitation of Android Auto (see App, PWA & offline)
On narrow phone displays (below 560 pixels), the heart isn't in the track row but in the options menu (⋮), because the title needs the space. A small filled heart below the title still shows that it's marked; see Interface.
Finding your favourites again
- “Show favourites only” filter: works on every tab of the library (artists, albums, tracks, genre), on the desktop as on the phone.
- Three sections on the home page: favourite artists, albums and tracks. You set the order and visibility in the home page editor.
Out of the box, the favourites sections show a random selection each time instead of always the ones you marked most recently. You can switch that off in the home page editor.
